Questions We Get Asked

What a windshield costs in Calgary, when a chip can be repaired, drive-away time, insurance, winter installs and what our warranty covers.

Can my chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield?

Send a photo and we will tell you before booking anything. As a rule: a chip smaller than a toonie, or a single crack under about six inches, away from the edge and out of the driver's sight line, is usually repairable. Anything touching the edge of the glass, longer than 15 cm, or sitting directly in front of the driver usually is not.

How much does a windshield cost in Calgary?

It depends almost entirely on which glass your car takes, and the range between the cheapest and the most expensive windshield for the same model year can be threefold. A rain sensor, acoustic lamination, a heated wiper park, a camera bracket or a heads-up display each move the number. Text the year, make, model and trim and we will price the actual part. How long does a replacement take?

Thirty to forty minutes on site for a windshield, about the same for a door window, closer to an hour for a rear windshield. Curing time is separate, and we tell you that number before we start.

When can I drive the car?

Right away. We use Sika urethane, and it is safe to drive as soon as the install is done. The bond keeps building for 2 to 3 hours after that, so go easy on the car that evening: no car wash, no door slamming.

Can you come to my workplace?

Yes, and a lot of our jobs are exactly that. We need a parking spot where the car can sit for the install and the cure, ideally out of direct wind. An underground parkade works well in winter.

Do you work in winter?

Yes, with conditions. Adhesive needs the right temperature to cure, and below about -5 we do not fit glass outdoors at all. If you have a garage, we work in it. If you do not, we have a space you can bring the car to, or we book around the weather. Where the conditions will not give a bond we can warrant, we rebook rather than fit it anyway.

Do you deal with my insurance?

We do not bill insurers directly. You pay us and we give you an invoice carrying the vehicle details, part numbers and labour breakdown your adjuster needs. On a single side window it is worth checking your deductible first, because the repair often comes in under it.

My car has a camera behind the mirror. Can you still do it?

Yes. Many vehicles from around 2018 onward need the camera recalibrated once the glass has been moved. We fit the glass and send you to the shop we use for calibration, and we flag it before booking so it is planned into the job rather than sprung on you at the end.

Is aftermarket glass safe?

Good aftermarket glass is made to the same standard as the original and is a reasonable choice on most vehicles. Cheap aftermarket glass is not: the common problems are optical distortion at the edges, a slightly wrong curve that stresses the bond, and thinner lamination. We will tell you which option we are quoting and why.

Will the chip repair be invisible?

No. It will go from obvious to a faint mark you have to look for. The point of a repair is structural, it stops the damage spreading. Anyone promising invisible is overselling.

What if the chip you repaired cracks later?

The cost of the repair comes off the price of the replacement.

Do you charge extra to come to me?

Not inside Calgary. Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane and Chestermere carry a travel charge that depends on the town and the time of day, and it is in the price you get before you book.

How do I pay?

Cash or Interac e-Transfer, when the job is done.

Can you replace a side window at my house?

Not yet. Windshields we come to you for, wherever the car is parked. Side, rear and door glass currently needs to come to our shop, since that job needs equipment our mobile kit does not carry yet. Text us and we will tell you the easiest way to get the car to us, and we are adding mobile side and rear glass as we build that out.

What happens to all the broken glass?

Tempered side glass does not crack, it explodes into several thousand blunt cubes that go into the door cavity, under the seat rails, into the seat belt retractor and into the heater vents. We pull the door card, clear the cavity and the regulator track, and vacuum out the areas you cannot reach yourself. Glass left in a door track chews up the new window inside a month, and glass left in a seat finds a passenger eventually.

Why are you only open in the evening?

Because that is when we can get to your car and when you are actually home. We are on the road during the day. Text is the fastest way to reach us at any hour, and a photo gets you a price without waiting for a phone call.

What should I do with a fresh chip before you arrive?

Put clear tape over it and leave the tape on. Keep water and dirt out of the break, because a contaminated chip will not take resin properly. And go easy on the defroster against a cold windshield, since that temperature shock is what turns chips into cracks.

Do you take business and fleet work?

Yes. Several vehicles at one address is the easiest kind of job to schedule. Call (587) 330-3818 and we can set up regular invoicing.

Still Have a Question?

Text it with a photo. Answers come back the same evening, and so does a price.
